Colours Coffee Shop

Colours Coffee Shop, based at the Bill Salmon Centre in Hatfield, provides training and hands-on work experience to people who have experienced mental distress. The cafe also helps break down the stigma surrounding mental health issues as it is open to the public.

Mind in Mid Herts took on the coffee shop in 2008, renamed it "Colours" and is running it as a social enterprise. It is a busy coffee shop serving the local community not only with coffee, but delicious snacks and lunches all cooked on the premises.

Colours is an excellent resource for helping people with mental health issues who want to get back into work. We recruit trainees with mental health issues to provide them work experience and training in a safe and secure environment, at the same time providing real work experience where they can gain/improve their skills meeting the general public, managing a work load, food preparation and dealing with money.

Support is always on hand from Janice Webb, who manages the Coffee Shop and Val Mackenzie, our Way2Work Employment Consultant, can be contacted for advice and guidance.

Mind in Mid Herts is also hoping to offer NVQ training in order that the volunteer service users will gain qualifications which will enable them to move back into mainstream employment.

As Colours is so well situated in Hatfield Town Centre it is an excellent venue for Mind in Mid Herts to use to promote and raise awareness of the services we offer and we have already used it as a base for public events like World Mental Health Day.
