As part of the continuing professional development programme, for volunteers and staff, a one day workshop:

The Emotional Development of Children –

Attachment theory and Mental Health

Friday, 27 January 2012

This workshop will focus on the life and work of John Bowlby from the perspective of his son Richard. The day will start with an overview of attachment theory from a personal perspective and look at the significance of attachment relationships throughout life, using video clips to illustrate the various concepts. Then to examine the significance of attachment to main care giver and other figures in children’s lives including both parents and the care of babies and toddlers by non-parental figures. There will be ample opportunity for questions and discussion throughout the presentation so that content can be guided by the wider/individual interests of the delegates.

We will use the experience of the group participants, to create a context, for mutual learning and collaboratively develop skills and techniques for on going practice.

This workshop will be helpful for professionals working with people who have mental health difficulties.

Course Leader:  Richard Bowlby retired in 1999 from medical photography producing illustrations for research communications. He now gives lectures to health care professionals using video material and personal insights to promote a much broader understanding of his father’s work on attachment theory. He supports a range of organisations that address challenging attachment issues, and is seeking ways to help the general public benefit from a better understanding of attachment relationships.

Time:   9.30am to 4.30pm, Friday, 27 January 2012.

Venue:   TBC in Stevenage

Fee:  £55.00 for people outside Mind in Mid Herts - Free to volunteers and staff at MiMH
