Changing the Narrative on Suicide Starts With One Conversation…

At Mind in Mid Herts, we have created this page to signpost people in Hertfordshire and beyond to clear, reliable information about suicide prevention. If you are experiencing suicidal thoughts, are worried about someone you care for, or want to understand how to spot the signs, you are not alone.

World Suicide Prevention Day 2025 takes place on 10th September. It is a global awareness day dedicated to challenging stigma around suicide, sharing hope, and encouraging action to save lives. Every year, communities across the world unite to raise awareness, encourage conversations, and highlight the support available.

Every life matters. Every story counts. And every conversation has the power to save a life.

On World Suicide Prevention Day, people around the world light candles at 8pm to remember lives lost to suicide and to show support for suicide prevention. Sharing this page, lighting a candle, or starting a conversation — these simple acts echo far beyond ourselves.

Workplaces play a vital role in suicide prevention. Supportive and compassionate working environments can make a huge difference in helping people feel safe, valued, and able to seek help.

Suicide is complex and deeply personal. Employers have an important responsibility to create cultures where staff feel safe to speak openly about their mental health. This free webinar will equip HR professionals, managers, and workplace leaders with practical knowledge to:

  • Spot the signs of suicidal distress.
  • Respond with empathy and confidence.
  • Embed compassionate strategies to protect staff wellbeing.

Every Life Matters. Every Story Counts.

One of our Spot the Signs trainers, who lost their father to suicide nearly 10 years ago, now bravely delivers this suicide prevention training– a subject that’s deeply personal to them. Recently, a psychiatrist who worked on the ward where their family member was in before their death attended the training that they were delivering.  It was a full-circle moment – turning personal pain and experiences into something truly meaningful that may inspire and teach professionals how to be more vigilant in identifying and preventing suicide in the future.

World Suicide Prevention Day offers us a moment to stand together — to spot the signs, start the conversation, and remind each other: you are not alone. By creating awareness and nurturing safe spaces, we can help ensure everyone knows that support is within reach.

You Are Not Alone

If you are experiencing suicidal thoughts — or are worried about someone else — please know support is available.

  • In an emergency or if someone is in immediate danger, call 999 straight away.
  • If you are worried about someone, check in gently, listen without judgment, and encourage them to seek help.
