Volunteers’ Week: A Time to Say Thanks & Celebrate Our Community

 

Volunteers’ Week is a UK-wide celebration of the incredible contribution that volunteers make to organisations and communities across the country. At Mind in Mid Herts, it’s a chance to honour our dedicated volunteers — and to inspire others to get involved.

This year, we’re embracing the themes:

These themes beautifully complement the message of Mental Health Awareness Week, which we marked last month — making this an even more powerful moment to shine a light on the people who generously give their time to support mental health in Hertfordshire.

To show our appreciation, we’re hosting a series of Coffee & Cake events across our Wellbeing Centres, offering our volunteers a warm thank-you in person. Each volunteer will also receive a signed ‘thank you’ card from our CEO, Sharn Tomlinson, which was designed by those who use our services and staff as a small token of our immense gratitude.

We’ve been sharing some touching volunteer quotes on our social media but we’d like to give a special mention to Mahtab, pictured, who shares her inspiring volunteering journey with us here:

“Hi, I’m Mahtab Sobhani and I’m proud to volunteer with Mind in Mid Herts as part of the Keeping in Touch programme. I recently completed my Master’s in Legal Practice and currently work as a Legal and Compliance Manager. Outside of work, I have a deep interest in psychology and wellbeing, and I enjoy reading, spending time in nature, and bringing people together, whether that’s through a book club I started or meaningful one-on-one conversations.

My journey into volunteering was inspired by personal experience. I’ve seen first-hand how profoundly mental health can affect people, friends, family, and loved ones close to me have struggled, and I know how isolating that can be. That’s why I wanted to step up in any way, shape or form to help others feel less alone. Volunteering with Mind felt like the right place to start giving back.

As a Keeping in Touch Caller, my role is to make phone calls to individuals who may be feeling isolated or just in need of someone to talk to and what matters most is being present and offering a listening ear.

Volunteering has given me a greater sense of purpose and perspective. It’s a small-time commitment, but it makes a big difference, for them and for me. It’s a reminder of the power of human connection and the importance of simply showing up for someone. I’m incredibly grateful to be part of this community and hope to continue supporting mental health in any way I can.”
